Why the 700 Grapes in Your Bottle of Wine Matter (And How They = Raising Your Rates)

Yep, seven hundred*(!) grapes. Every bitty flavour bomb smooshed and squelched and pummelled into that all-magical alchemy of one precious bottle of vino. Me + my BFF + a good ol’ fashioned trough of gnocchi and that bottle’s gone faster than a Moonstruck Cher-smack.

 
It’s the same whatever your jam. If you’re a master eyebrow-waxer, laughter-yogi or dog walker extraordinaire. Your product or service is your special blend. And if you’re great at it (I know you are!) you expertly juggle all those moving parts, deliver your masterpiece and make it all seem easy-peasy. 

But it isn’t.

And if you’re looking to charge what your worth, folks need to know exactly what they’re getting. Realize you didn’t just fall out of bed a full-fledged scuba-diving-pizza-delivery-man. Heck no! Your photographic eye wasn’t developed taking iPhone shots off the back of a Vegas boogie bus. No stinkin’ way. Yes, there’s passion and natural talent. But you’ve also invested time and money. Relentlessly honed your skills and set up an actual operation. A business for Pete’s sake!

And all those second-nature steps in your process of each project you take on?

Will you spend a half-hour on Zoom exploring their vision with them? Provide a discovery questionnaire to facilitate a deeper dive into their aesthetic and goals? Analyze that data to get into the nitty-gritty of their biz’s personality? Host a strategy discussion to agree upon a direction following that? Will you provide access to a customized project management tool to host all the pertinent info and keep track of progress? Will you collab with or get input from multiple people on their team? Provide multiple revisions or concepts? Turnaround those revisions quickly? Give them a variety of file formats to use across different social media platforms and collateral? 

ALL of that is part of your process. Pieces of the same delicious, juicy pie (or bottle of wine πŸ˜‰). All meticulously choreographed to make your final deliverable exceptional. And your client needs to know all of it, so they understand:

  • You’re a true pro with an efficient operation
  • Exactly what to expect – and what you’re promising to deliver
  • You take benchmarks and milestones seriously (so they should too with feedback etc.)
  • What seems like a no-sweat, off-the-top-of-your-head final product actually takes time, effort and expertise
  • You don’t deal in guesswork

And, perhaps, most importantly,

YOU. ARE. WORTH. EVERY. PENNY.

If you aren’t “showing all your grapes” πŸ˜ you’re likely leaving cash on the counter. So take a closer look at exactly what you do, what’s valuable when executing your brilliance and put that shizzle out there.  

It might just be the quickest, easiest way to raise your rates.
