DON’T BE A PERFECTIONIST DWEEB

(OR Communicating Through Pie….
OR Just Do The Darn Thing Already!)

Stephanie Hockersmith makes pies. But they aren’t any old pies. Ohhhh no, no, no.
Stephanie’s pies delight the mouth but they also tickle the eyeballs.
AND (best part) titillate all the bookworm-neurons with intricate interpretations of – get this –
BOOK COVERS.

 YASSSS! Ms. Stephanie + books + pie = pure, sweet mah-zheeque!.
(Or, as some less highfalutin-types might call it: plain ol’ magic.)

Worth noting, girlfriend poo-poos the ultimate mouth-cheat that is fondant *gag* and only deals in the legit deliciousness of real pastry and other goodies to sculpt her masterpieces.
(Sidebar: it’s truly just shy of criminal to call fondant – AKA rubber-and-your-grandma’s-stale- Birkenstocks-flavoured-junk – “frosting”. Seriously, bakers, stop the insanity.)
Here’s a taste of Stephanie’s magnificent work:

Stephanie Hockersmith Pie
(Photo: @PieLadyBooks) It’s PIE, y’all!

Stephanie’s (@PieLadyBooks ) creations are inspiring and connecting with people far and wide, spawning happiness and digestive-joy-gurgles in many a lucky belly.  So much so that she’s made herself a full-blown business of it. Transformed communicating through pie into dollah-dollah-bills!
A rockstar, right?
(The most!) creative comms done in A+ fashion!

As is so often the case, I saw this marvelousness and was very inspired. It got my engine revved and ready to launch back into my most current creative project, writing for a dream client whose services I adore.
ME: this will be wordsmithery-luxe! Distinct and creatively dazzling!
Only Pie-Lady-level output!
GO! GO! GO!
And then….

that buzzkill of all buzzkills: a blank page and the silent-but-jeering, plink-plink-plink of the cursor.

*cue-utter-deflation and full fear of not-up-to-snuffness*
~~~sheepishly closes laptop~~~
(Anyone else relate? 👆)
 This happens a lot.
Inspiration leads to excited expectations and then, the maddening freezing up. The feeling that there’s too much at stake. They’ll be judgement. Etc. etc. et-MF’ing-cetra.
I was dead-centre in the eye one said storm when I found the story of Dillon Helbig. Dillon is eight years old. He wrote (and illustrated!) a book, “The Adventures of Dillon Helbig’s Crismis,”. Even signed “by Dillon His Self.”
This kid didn’t care about perfection or expectations or anything.
He just wanted to write.
SO HE DID.
Then, something even bawlsier: dude snuck his book out of the safe cocoon of his house and onto a Boise, Idaho’s library shelf.
He legit-authorfied himself, just like that.
BALLER MOVE.
And then, this perfectly less-than-perfect manuscript did something: it became a bonafide hit! The library knew a shining example of kid-genius when they saw it and so did the people! Now, there’s a waitlist a mile long for Dillon’s unique tale of Crismis.
(Or, as some less highfalutin-types in this case, might call it: plain ol’ Christmas.)
Just as improbably, this story’s unstuck grown-up, profesh me from write-freeze a bunch of times since I read it. Been a welcome boost over the blinking cursor wall and into just getting it started. Just doing the darn thing, already, without fear or hesitation.
Because sometimes taking that first step is all you need to gain momentum. To create your magnum opus. Or simply polish off that client’s first draft. You bet your Great Aunt Judy’s jalopy that if Stephanie Hockersmith told folks she was going to make book-cover-pies a business, the scepticism might’ve outweighed the enthusiasm. But she wanted to create. Needed to. And so she did. Dillon did the same.
 Write one word. Make one pie.
Just DO IT. Start.
Take that first step and enjoy the inevitable ride, wherever it may take you.
