It’s grossly overused, especially in business. Worse, more often than not, it’s synonymous with “birds of a feather”. And that = same-same-same. Safe and sweeping and (let’s be honest) pervasive. It’s also a grade-A snooze.
Benjamin Olson is 2 years old. Mary O’Neill is 100. They’re best buds. Nearly every day they shoot the breeze and have a snack. Their friendship is unlikely. Unusual. It flies in the face (😁) of the ol’ adage. Flips it the bird. Is a little cuckoo. (I’ll stop.)
Mary and Benjamin are happy as larks together. (Last one, promise.) Their differences make for a bang-up connection, conversation and a human story that cuts through the noise. In fact, when Benjamin and his mum, Sarah put a call out to help celebrate Mary’s 100th birthday, over 300(!) people from all over the world came through. This dynamic duo’s powerful, one-of-a-kind bond has helped them both navigate the pandemic… and positively impacted hundreds of others. Brought joy. Inspired communication. Changed the vibe of the world in a small yet very tangible way.

The Tip? When looking to surround yourself with the “right” clients, colleagues or even friends, though it may not feel easier, or instinctual, reach outside of your everyday. Into novel, new places, books, and people pools unexpected. Stay open and excited to find the peculiar and accidentally wonderful that might change your thinking. Your perspective…maybe even your life. Because a smörgåsbord is almost always more compelling than a big ol’ stale bag of sameness.
